Wheat...West coast wheat markets regained some ground this week against
the mid-week rebound in the futures complex. Cash bids were also supported
by an improved pace of export demand over the past week.
Weekly Sales...USDA reported a strong rebound in export demand for U.S.
wheat last week, registering more than 21 million bushels in new sales to
place commitments at 264 million bushels. This stands 4% ahead of a year
ago and 18% above the five-year average pace. Hard red spring was the top
seller with 8.8 million bushels, putting sales at 76 million which is 13%
below a year ago but 12% above average. Hard red winter garnered another
6.5 million bushels and with commitments of 100 million, sets 60% ahead of
last year and 49% above average. White wheat booked 3.3 million bushels,
and with 38 million in commitments is lagging 34% behind last year and 16%
below the average pace.
Top Buyers...The Philippines stepped in as the big buyer last week with
nearly 6 million bushels of mostly hard red spring wheat. Thailand and the
Dominion Republic each booked 2.2 million, followed by Mexico with 2.1 and
Nigeria with 1.5 million bushels.
